How to use the new Indexed setting in PIM, for Denver Mattress, Furniture Row and Rest & Recline

1. In Short

Storefront search now follows the attribute settings you manage in PIM. One setting controls whether shoppers can search and filter on an attribute: Indexed.

Indexed on: the attribute is searchable and can be used as a storefront filter (facet).

Indexed off: shoppers cannot search on a text or list attribute or filter products by it. Its values still show on product pages. Single number and yes/no attributes are not affected: their filters show values and counts and filter products the same way whether Indexed is on or off. Number parts of a compound attribute (for example a measurement’s width, length and height) follow the compound attribute’s own Indexed setting.

Long values are safe: a value longer than 8,191 characters is still saved, shown and searchable as text. It is only left out of exact-match filtering, so a product is never dropped from search because of one long value.

Your production storefront is already set up: we have turned Indexed on for every attribute your storefront filters use today. Shoppers see the same filters and values as before. Sandbox is not fully aligned yet; see section 5.

What you need to remember

From now on, any text, list or other non-numeric attribute you want shoppers to search or filter on must be marked Indexed in PIM. If it is not, after the next search refresh its filter shows no values. Single number and yes/no filters work whether or not they are Indexed. Compound attributes must be Indexed for any of their parts to be filtered, including number parts.

2. Which Attribute Type this applies to:

The Indexed setting matters for text-based attributes and for compound attributes. Single number and yes/no attributes can be filtered the same way with Indexed on or off. This corrects version 3 of this guide, which said a number or yes/no filter does not narrow the results when the attribute is not Indexed.

Compound attributes: turn Indexed on for the attribute itself, for example Size. Its parts, such as Size Name and Short Name, follow that setting. If the parent is not Indexed, none of its parts can be searched or filtered.

3. How to make an attribute available as a storefront filter:

In PIM, open the attribute and turn on Indexed.

Save and publish the attribute. Publishing automatically republishes every product template that uses it; you do not need to republish templates one by one.

Open a support ticket at support@upstartcommerce.com listing the attributes you changed. A change to Indexed reaches the storefront after the next search refresh, which our team runs for you.

If the filter is new, add it in the storefront filter setup (see section 4).

Before you publish

If the attribute has unpublished changes (a draft) from someone else, publishing also publishes those changes. Check the draft first.

Publishing an attribute that is used by many templates is safe, but it updates all of those templates at once. Where possible, change several attributes together and publish them in one go.

Label changes: a new attribute Label shows in the Search Admin field list only after every product template that uses the attribute has been republished twice. Republish those templates again after publishing a Label change.

Archived or disabled attributes: if a template contains an archived or disabled attribute, its automatic republish fails. Remove the attribute from the template or re-enable it first. No production template has one today.

4. Setting up Filters (Facets) on the storefront:

The filter list on each site is configured separately from PIM. When you add or edit a filter, check these points:

The filter name is set in the filter setup. It is not taken from the PIM attribute label. Renaming an attribute in PIM does not rename an existing filter.

Choose the right field for the attribute type. For text, select and list attributes, select the version ending in .keyword. For yes/no and number attributes, select the field itself; they have no .keyword version, and the filter would show no values.

Important: a wrong text field breaks search for the whole site. If a filter is saved on a plain text field (without .keyword), every search on that site returns an error, not just an empty filter. If the attribute is not Indexed, the fix needs both steps: turn on Indexed and ask us for a search refresh, then re-pick the field ending in .keyword in the filter setup. The field list offers plain text fields without a warning, so check the field before saving.

Leave the Include setting blank unless you need it. If Include is saved with an empty value, the filter hides all of its values.

Use the attribute’s current name. If an attribute was renamed or replaced, point the filter at the new one. For example, the Fills filter (Furniture Row) and the Fill filter (Denver Mattress) must use fillTypes.

New Names for Product Dimension Fields:

Products have three groups of dimension fields. They now have distinct names in the filter setup, so you can tell them apart:

Field group

What it describes

Names you will see

Dimensions

The product's own size

Dimensions Width, Dimensions Length, Dimensions Height, Dimensions Unit

Shipping Packages Dimensions

The size of each shipping box

Shipping Packages Dimensions Width, Length, Height, Unit

SKU Dimensions

Size details for each SKU

SKU Dimensions Width, Length, Height, Unit, Name, Description

Existing filters keep their own names. For example, the Depth (in) filter on Furniture Row and Rest & Recline uses Dimensions Width, and this is correct: in your product data, Dimensions Width holds the front-to-back depth (36 to 40 inches for sofas) and Dimensions Length holds the side-to-side width (80 inches and more). Please do not point it at Dimensions Length; it would show widths. SKU Dimensions currently have no data in production, so a filter on them would be empty.

5. Changes already made for your sites:

On 19 October 2026 we turned Indexed on for 74 attributes in production and refreshed search. Every storefront filter on all three production sites shows the same values as before.

The attributes switched on include all of these filter attributes:

Group

Attributes

Product filters

productGroup, collection, features, styles, backStyles, armStyles, footStyles, armHeight, backHeight, seatDepth, seatWidth, seatHeightsFacet, seatingCapacity, cushions, bedDesigns, comfortRating, pillowType, mattressTypes, mattressStyles, dmcMaterials, fillTypes, leafType, tableBases, tableHeight, tableTopStyles, numberOfDrawers, numberOfShelves, size

Swatches

Yes/no flags

Other

content, delivery, pricing and reference attributes that were already filterable before the change

Attributes we left as display-only, please confirm:

These 9 attributes were explicitly set to not Indexed in PIM, so we kept that setting. They were filterable before and are now display-only. If your storefront, page filters or content areas filter on any of them, tell us and we will switch them on.

Sandbox: two attributes still to switch on

Sandbox has the same attributes Indexed as production, with two exceptions:

styles is not Indexed yet, because it has unpublished changes (a draft) from your team. Publishing it would also publish that draft, so we held it back. Please publish the draft or tell us we can.

backStyles was missed. We will switch it on together with styles.

Until both are Indexed and search is refreshed, the Style and Back Style filters are empty in sandbox. Searches on the Rest & Recline sandbox site were also reported to return an error; we are checking whether it is related and will update you. Also in sandbox, the Furniture Row Product Features filter has an empty Include value, which hides all its values; production is not affected.

Archived and Hidden SKUs

The search refresh also removed 337 SKUs from search (318 on Furniture Row, 19 on Denver Mattress, 1 on Rest & Recline). All of them are Archived or Hidden in PIM; no active SKU was removed. The list is available on request.

6. Filters that need a setup fix:

These filters were already empty before this change. Each needs a small change in the filter setup; no change in PIM is needed.

Filter

What to change

Fills / Fill

Furniture Row / Denver Mattress

Point the filter at fillTypes; the field fills does not exist

Foundation Required?

Furniture Row

Use the yes/no field foundationRequired, not the .keyword version

Size is set per SKU (variant), not per product, so a product-level Size filter is always empty. Tell us how you want Size offered as a filter.

7. Troubleshooting:

What you see

Most likely cause

What to do

A filter appears with no values

The attribute is not Indexed

Turn on Indexed, publish, and ask us for a search refresh

A yes/no or number filter is empty

The filter uses a .keyword field

Select the field itself in the filter setup

A filter is empty on one site only

That site's filter setup (Include value, field) or no data on that site

Compare the filter setup with a site where it works

You changed Indexed but nothing changed

No search refresh yet

Ask us to run the search refresh

A renamed attribute still shows the old filter name

Filter names are set in the filter setup

Rename the filter in the filter setup

A very long value cannot be filtered on

Values over 8,191 characters are left out of exact-match filtering

Expected; the value is still searchable as text

Search returns an error on the whole site

A filter uses a plain text field (not .keyword), or a text attribute that is not Indexed

Re-pick the field ending in .keyword in the filter setup. If the attribute is not Indexed, first turn on Indexed and ask us for a search refresh

A renamed attribute still shows the old name in Search Admin

Templates not yet republished twice

Republish every template that uses the attribute, then republish them once more

8. Frequently Asked Questions:

Will my product data change?

No. No product values are changed or deleted. Only how attributes are used in search and filtering changes.

Can an attribute be searchable but hidden from the filter list?

Yes. Turn on Indexed and do not add a filter for it in the storefront filter setup. The filter list comes from the filter setup (section 4), not from the Facetable setting in PIM.

Do I need to republish product templates?

Not for an Indexed change: publishing the attribute republishes them automatically. For a Label change, yes: the new label shows in Search Admin only after every template that uses the attribute has been republished twice.

How long does a search refresh take?

About 10 to 15 minutes. Search stays available throughout. At the moment shoppers switch to the refreshed data, SKU results can be briefly incomplete (for about 20 seconds on 19 October).

Why do some SKUs no longer appear in search?

They are Archived or Hidden in PIM. The refresh removes them from search, as intended.
